What is a Block Captain?
  • A Block Captain is any concerned citizen who would like to take an active role in the revitalization of Norristown.
What Role(s) must a Block Captain fill?
  • Must act as the link between municipality officials, local police and fire departments and community members.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the community and encourage communication among members of the area being served.
What are the responsibilities of a Block Captain?
  • Must attend regular (monthly) block captain meetings held on the last Tuesday of each month at the Montgomery County Human Services Center - Community Room at 6PM.
  • Share information obtained with other members on the block.
  • Encourage other community members to become active in the revitalization of Norristown.
  • Always treat members of the community with courtesy, dignity and respect.
  • Keep a watchful eye on the area and report incidents immediately to the proper authorities.
  • Attempt to coordinate social events such as block parties where neighbors can interact.
  • Encourage and coordinate meetings on a regular basis in order to discuss concerns, possible solutions and progress.
  • Set up and maintain contact information of every member on the block.  This phone chain or list should be available to all residents and should be updated when necessary.
  • Greet all new neighbors and educate them about the block.
  • Keep neighbors alert of criminal activity in the area.
  • Attend training meetings that are applicable to the position.
  • Coordinate problem solving efforts of the area.
